HEARTBREAK

I am drawn to the fragile symbiosis between opposing forces: organic and inorganic, disfigurement and ornamentation, decay and regeneration. My process involves layering, cutting, rephotographing, and reconstructing transparencies of gears and anatomical forms. The repetitive acts of fragmenting, transforming, and reassembling are fundamental to my practice. With each iteration, the boundary between organic and mechanical elements dissolves, encompassing resistance, rejection, adaptation, and renegotiation. As body and machine disrupt and reshape each other, their original structures and functions yield to new relationships and patterns.

Gears soften into tendrils; fragmented body parts form unexpected connections, developing distinct rhythms and identities. Through repetition, mirroring, and symmetry, these transformed elements assemble into patterns that initiate ritual movement and regeneration across layered ecosystems. A flower spirals outward, flinging tiny gears into space with centrifugal force. Textures of joints and zippers emerge where gears attempt to split body parts yet remain linked, dividing without fully severing. A field of gears transforms bones into a tapestry of fractal snowflakes and aortas into
bombs.

This series of 20 limited-edition photo gravure prints originated as a visual journal reflecting on my experience of abortion. Although I am pro-choice, that conviction did not shield me from heartbreak. The work arose from the tension between these seemingly contradictory truths: my belief in reproductive autonomy and the grief, conflict, and emotional complexity of my own experience. Over time, this personal narrative became the foundation for a broader exploration of how opposing forces can coexist.
