ODE TO THE FRENCH TART
When I start a painting, I think of each shape and color as having its own flavor, scent, and texture. I want the viewer to recall the impossible complexity of chocolate, the fragrance of mint, and the mouth-puckering sting of fresh lime. I use root rectangles and dynamic symmetry based on mathematical ratios to divide the page into a grid of harmonious parts. This approach allows me to deconstruct the conventional form into abstract shapes and reassemble them in unexpected and playful ways. I construct layers of soft pastels to produce planes of vivid and richly saturated hues. The powdery and fragile characteristics of this medium reflect light while imparting depth, movement, and a surprising vulnerability.
